Pretty, Warm Penguins

Oh, what a fun day!!!  Penguin projects filled the tables and the excitement was electric!!!  We began our presentations with those who had costumes, as they were wearing some of it as clothing!  Three emperor penguins and 2 gentoo penguins gave reports!!

Then, we replicated an experiment we had read about in our read aloud, Ready, Freddy!  The Penguin Problem.  It involved using a tub of icy water, plastic gloves and a ziploc bag filled with shortening (lard).
Three brave Gators were able to put their hands in the icy water...one unprotected, except for a plastic glove and one gloved and wrapped inside a blubber lined bag.  We timed each one and found over a minute difference in time between the protected and unprotected hand in the 5 degree water!
One Gator braved it for over 2 minutes unprotected and was still going strong with the blubber mitt at 4:30 minutes!!!  We could see why penguins are so happy in the Antarctic!!!
